Lexington’s Mayor signed the U.S. Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement in Nov. 2005.   The Sierra Club’s Bluegrass Chapter initiated LexCoolCity.org to work with the city on climate protection.

The LexCoolCity.org workgroup expanded to include LFUCG staff and interested citizens.  LFUCG Council will vote to pursue climate stability goals through the best practices recommended by ICLEI (the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, now called Local Governments for Sustainability).


In February 2008 LFUCG Council voted to pursue climate protection through membership in Local Governments for Sustainability.  The city will expand carbon footprint monitoring and reduction efforts through ICLEI's software and technical assistance.
