Dr. Vandana Shiva will deliver the Spring Sustainability Lecture at 7pm in Memorial Hall at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Shiva is an internationally-renowned scientist, author and activist with strong interests in sustainable development, feminist theory, alternative globalization and bioengineering. She is widely regarded as one of the brightest minds working in the interdisciplinary field of sustainability. Dr. Shiva is also the founder of Navdanya, a participatory research initiative to provide direction and support to environmental activism. This is the second lecture in the President’s Sustainability Lecture Series and Dr. Shiva will be discussing the importance of higher education’s role in sustainable development. In today`s world, "green" is everywhere. But in a time where leadership and bold policy action is needed to combat human health issues, natural resource depletion and the effects of climate change, policy options that are effective, immediate and measurable may be difficult to find through the clutter. How can policy makers and advocates work together to create effective policies for green buildings and communities? State and local policy makers will share their stories of crafting effective green policies. Resources such as the Green Playbook (www.greenplaybook.org) will be discussed.
