If people measure their travel and lifestyles, they can invest proportionately in tree planting, renewable energy development and other activities that help compensate for carbon emissions.   One tricky aspect of the emerging market for carbon offsets is lack of standardization about what counts as an offset, and difficulty in verifying current or future offsets.  (For instance, a tree planted in Uganda now is actually allowed to mature and fulfill its future carbon reduction role.)  None the less, companies like Expedia and Travelocity facilitate carbon offsets for travel.
