Institutions of higher education all over the country and right here in Kentucky are making commitments to combat global warming by way of green energy purchases, curriculum integration, and other sustainable initiatives.

 

AASHE (the Assoc. for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) is an organization composed of colleges and universities from all over the United States and Canada that are interested in fostering a sustainable future through the promotion of sustainability in all sectors of higher education. Their Website (link found above) offers resources on campus sustainability to its member institutions. AASHE is currently headquartered right here in Lexington at 213 North Limestone!

  • Second Nature has a similar mission focusing on assisting colleges and universities develop strategic transformative action plans to incorporate sustainable principles in education and collaboration with local communities.
  • The University of Kentucky, an AASHE member, is engaged in various activities promoting sustainability. UK's Greenthumb is the largest student-led environmental club in the state and has pressured the university to create a Sustainability Task Force. UK was also invited to compete in the Department of Energy's 2009 Solar Decathalon, highlighted in this Herald-Leader article. Following AASHE's encouragement for the incorporation of sustainability into all sectors of higher education, UK even offers new undergraduate curriculum in Sustainable Agriculture.
