Organizational Buy-In

An awareness of the criteria used to prioritize new projects will enable you to find the rationale that aligns a proposed energy savings project with your organization’s mission.

Notice how new activities and initiatives are adopted by your organization.  Many organizations and businesses include cost effective operations as part of their mission or policies.  In such cases cost effectiveness can justify focus on energy saving projects.  Religious and civic organizations may include promoting good quality of life, civic values or stewardship of community and natural resources, any of which could include energy saving activities.

Those with more experience in an organization should be able to help identify the approaches and rationales that have been persuasive historically.

  • If the group has an annual planning process, suggesting energy saving projects through the planning process may get them onto the priority list.
  • If the organization has a relevant management team (like the site based management teams at schools or the facility committees in churches) approaching the committee may be the best route.
  • If the organization has an active board of directors, approaching the board about changing policies or priorities to be more earth friendly may pave the way for new initiatives.
  • Organizations with professional staff may respond to initiatives you develop and propose through the staff.
  • Organizations with limited resources may be better able to undertake projects for which you have recruited volunteer labor or identified people with needed talents in advance.
