There are straightforward, tested and true ways to reduce your energy bills.

  • Get a daily eco-tip at TheDailyGreen.com.
  • Replace high use light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs and save an estimated $40+ in electricity per bulb.

  • Seasonally seal drafts around windows and doors with rope caulk or weather stripping, available at most hardware stores.
    • Dick and Faith Shore highly recommend using caulk, expecially for older houses that tend to be draftier. They also suggest using foam behind electrical outlets to help keep the interior warm without wasting energy or money.

Another way to cut down on drafts involves the installation of interior storm windows. To see other possible window improvements see projects for greater energy savings. Click on the picture to see this storm window example.

  • Lower the heat setting on your hot water tank – especially during summer and periods of lower water usage. (Water heating can account for 14%–25% of the energy consumed in your home. – US DOE)
  • Maintaining the performance of your house's ductwork can also help keep you warm and lead to decreases in your heating costs. Small leaks and dirty air filters can overwork your central heating system. Try to repace filters at least once a month. If the duct seams are visible where metal sections of duct surfaces meet, seal the joints with UL-181 foil tape or duct mastic. Finally, try removing the register covers and look for any gaps between the duct and the drywall. Heat may be escaping here so use foil tape or duct mastic to cover this gap, as well.
  • To take advantage of your ceiling fan during the cold winter season, look for a small switch on it that reverses the spin's direction. When it runs clockwise on the slowest speed, a small updraft that forces warm air down is produced.
