Prioritizing Larger Projects

Document Actions
Larger projects can be do-it-yourself or involve contractors depending on how handy you are.

These below can bring larger savings, but generally involve greater up front investment and planning ahead.  You can complete a home energy audit  to estimate which projects might save the most energy per dollar and time invested.  US Dept of Energy has an on-line home energy audit, and Kentucky Utilities has energy auditors that will come help analyze your home for $15.  If you are considering a particular type of energy technology (solar or geothermal for instance) installers usually provide assessments as a free service.  Consider LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) or Energy Star Guidelines in any new construction or renovation plans.

Factors to estimate in helping you prioritize projects can include the following:

  • Amount of estimated energy savings
  • Material and labor costs
  • Schedule/availability of contractor or whether you can Do-It-Yourself
  • Whether proposed changes require advanced approvals (historic district, zoning, building permits)
