Consider and advocate to adopt strong local policies from elsewhere
Considerations
These local policies were suggested by EPA in 1999, have been adopted by listed communities and could be considered for Lexington.
- Update motors in city operations (Long Beach, CA)
- Use renewable energy systems to improve air quality (Austin, TX)
- Purchase Green Power (air quality) (Santa Monica, CA)
- Provide incentives for mass transit or carpooling (West Hollywood, CA)
- Foster telecommuting and similar trip reduction programs (San Francisco, CA)
- Incentives for Green Roofs (Washington, D.C.)
- Initiate “Pay As You Throw” waste disposal programs. Charging residents for the collection of household trash based on the amount they throw away creates a direct economic incentive to recycle more and generate less waste. (Mount Vernon, IA)
- Promote the use of reflective surface and roofing materials. (Frederick, MD)
Other desirable local policies, resources and tools
- Urge Fayette Co Public Schools to join Kentucky Energy Efficiency Program for Schools to plan and implement energy savings projects system wide.
- Promote the use and zoning allowance of pervious pavement and infiltration drainage swales instead of curbs. These allow ground water to be absorbed under and around pavement, recharge ground aquifers, reducing load on storm sewers and lower treated water demand. Currently permissible in Lexington when/where LFUCG engineering approves.
- Municipal Fleet Efficiency tool from by Donlen Corp in partnership with CoolCities
- EPA’s local resource list
- Energy Star for governments
- Rocky Mountain Institute’s Community Energy Opportunity Finder, an online tool for identifying and quantifying energy, pollution and financial savings opportunities.
