Madison Climate Action Summary
Madison 2002 report was updated in 2005.
Contacted Jeanne Hoffman, Madison,
Wisconsin Facilities and
Sustainability Manager -
- The 2005 report
was a community-wide effort and included all areas of sustainability with
climate change being a part of the overall plan.
- Currently planning an update of the 2005 effort. They will have 3 meetings city-wide to cover the general population and may have breakfasts for business and other special groups to get input from the community. They also plan to use the web, Twitter and Facebook to get comments. They are working with a university graduate level class whose special project is to research what other communities are doing across the US, complete and present a report on their findings and help with the facilitation of the public input into the community plan.
- Staff currently includes 2 architects and 2 mechanical engineers
- Hope to add to that staffing next fiscal year with a person who will track the
progress toward established goals.
- Staff are part of the City
of Madison
engineering division. They have specific capital funding for prioritized
projects. They consider renewable and energy efficient projects to fund
and track their payback.
- They have surpassed their emission
reduction goals and, as a city, are doing better than the 25% use of renewable
energy. Coal is their primary source of electricity, too. They do
have a unique agreement with the local utility in that it will purchase
electricity generated by citizens through the use of solar and other
methods.
