Fayetteville Climate Plan Summary

To date have focused on reducing energy usage at government operations only.

No formal plan yet. Signed US Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement. Currently submitting grant to EPA to become a STAR demonstration city. STAR is a national comprehensive sustainability rating system modeled after the highly successful LEED Green Building Rating System. STAR being developed by ICLEI, the US Green Building Council, and the Center for American Progress. STAR will have approx 100 community indicators.
Anticipate conducting
greenhouse gas inventory in summer 2010, developing a sustainability and
climate action plan by Oct 2010, and will begin implementing plan in Dec 2010. Report on progress would occur in winter
2011.

Major role for University of Arkansas. Have Applied Sustainability Center at Univ of Arkansas that is heavily involved in sustainability. This Center is currently working with Arizona State University to create the new sustainability product index scorecard to be used by all Wal-Mart suppliers.
Univ of Arkansas has signed the American Colleges and University Presidents Climate Commitment. They have a stand alone climate action plan (took 2 years to create). Have established short, medium and long term goals. Have done inventories for 2002 through 2008. Goal is climate neutrality by 2040 and 50% reduction by 2021.

Fayetteville has a population of roughly 70,000 and is seen as a progressive city. Part of 6th fastest growing MSA. Have hired a Sustainability coordinator. Although they do not have a Climate Action Plan at this time, their 2025 Plan and their Trails Plan have both been recognized as superior.
