Celebrate EPA Best Practices Lexington has already implemented
Progress Lexington Fayette Urban County Government has made:
- Signed the Mayor’s climate change agreement and working on systems to measure city-wide carbon footprint.
- Buys Energy Star equipment for offices.
- Changes traffic and street lights to LED fixtures with every intersection upgrade.
Redesigns communities to encourage walking, biking and mass transit. Bicycle racks on busses extend low impact transportation into areas adjacent to bus routes. |
| Is converting fleets to run on alternative fuels and use hybrid vehicles |
- Facilitates carpooling through the commuter ride/matching program.
| Has police patrol on bicycles, horses, segas, and motorcycles, reducing emissions, gas use and increasing mobility in taffic and among crowds. |
- To improve energy efficiency of municipal buildings, LFUCG established internal energy management teams and evaluates environmental impact in purchase decisions.
- Integrates Smart Growth in planning and encourage infill. Smart Growth increases the use of land within its Urban Growth Boundary and redevelops brownfields.
- Plants trees to keep buildings and streets cooler to improve air quality, lower air-conditioning loads, and save money.
LFUCG has continually expanded its curbside recycling program. LFUCG recyles office paper internally to futher reduce landfill costs. |
- LFUCG promotes capture of methane from waste. Though Lexington solid waste goes to landfills in neighboring counties, LFUCG has captured excess methane generated during the sewage treatment process to help run the sludge digesters at the plant.
- LFUCG Building Inspection adopted and enforces revised DOE building codes for energy efficient building envelope design that lower the costs of heating, cooling and lighting by nearly 50% over 10 years.
