For Local Goverments to Become "Cool Cities"
LFUCG has taken action by signing onto the U.S. Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement in 2005 and through the Council’s pending resolution to benchmark current carbon outputs then form and implement a local action plan. Lexington was the 141st U.S. city to sign the Climate Change Agreement. Though Congress hasn’t ratified the Kyoto Treaty, so far over 600 US cities are going for the Kyoto targets locally!
Once municipalities are focused on lowering green house gas emissions, the international advisory organization Local Governments for Sustainability (formerly ICLEI) can provide extensive technical assistance.
For other local governments considering these steps, the following references may be useful.
The Sierra Club Cool Cities program supports cities and citizens in signing on to the Agreement.
